Bafana Bafana conceded a late goal as Zambia came back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 in Saturday's CHAN first leg third round qualifier at Buffalo City Stadium in East London.
Gift Motupa grabbed Bafana's first goal in the first half and Mario Booysen added a second after the interval, before Martin Phiri pulled one back in the second stanza. Later in proceedings, Tercious Malepe was sent off on and the Copper Bullets took advantage through Justin Shonga's equaliser.
In the early exhanges, Zambia went close to scoring but Bafana managed to clear a goalmouth scramble. Shonga went close when he tested Bruce Bvuma with a header that the goalkeeper gathered. Meanwhile, Motupa was looking menacing for the home side with a free kick that stung the palms of Zambia's number one.
Yet, the 22-year-old finally got his goal as he finished home from close range following a corner in the 32nd minute. Just before the break, Ryan Moon saw his effort blocked after being set up by the impressive Motupa.
Soon after the first goal, captain Mario Booysen got Bafana's second when he slammed home a Dumisani Zuma corner after seeing his initial effort stopped. Nonetheless, Chipolopolo cut the home side's advantage when substitute Phiri headed home.
With the match entering the final stages, Tercious Malepe was sent off and the Zambians were able to capitalise as Shonga netted not long before the full time whistle was blown. In the day's other CHAN qualifier, Uganda are in a strong position after beating Rwanda 3-0.
