Brentford manager Dean Smith says new signing Ezri Konsa has “unlimited potential” and will make the step up from League One to the Championship.

Konsa, who was born in Newham but is of African descent (his father is Congolese and his mother Angolan), signed with Brentford for an undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old defender is contracted to the EFL club until 2021, with an option for another year.

Smith told the Brentford website: “We are really pleased to have completed the signing of Ezri.

“He was much sought after and we are very happy that he has chosen us to continue his development. It is a really exciting signing for us because of his age, potential and attitude.

“He has played a lot of games at League One level and his potential is unlimited.

“Having spoken to many people who have worked with him at both club and international level, and having watched him numerous times, the coaching staff are all looking forward to working with him over the next three years.”

Konsa came through the youth ranks at Charlton and played for their first team from 2016 to 2018. He was also part of the England U-20 team which won their age group World Cup in South Korea last year.
