Swansea have warned interested suitors that defender Alfie Mawson is not for sale - unless they cough up a fee in the region of £50million.

Mawson has been linked with a move to Watford, Everton and West Ham in the January transfer window, with Swansea lying precariously at the bottom of the Premier League table.

But new Swansea boss Carlos Carvalhal insists the struggling club’s priority has to be bringing in players, rather than selling them this month, and has suggested that it will take mega money for them to even consider letting the 23-year-old go.

“When I signed it was very clear we would try and bring in players to improve the team,” he said.

“We will not sell the best players in January, the message is clear.

“I have had guarantees from the chairman, but it depends if someone comes in and gives £50million, £100million, £250million.

“Of course, then it is completely different - to me, [Philippe] Coutinho or Neymar.

“You can never say that it will not happen, but the fundamental idea is not to sell players and try to improve the team.”
